Botox Cosmetic is the most well-known injectable neuromodulator. Made by Allergan, it’s a form of botulinum toxin that temporarily relaxes facial muscles. This softens the look of dynamic wrinkles created by repeated muscle movement (think: frown lines and furrowed brows).

Originally developed to treat medical conditions such as cerebral palsy, Botox is FDA-approved to treat crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines.

Providers commonly use Botox off-label to soften and smooth lip lines, “bunny lines” on the nose, chin wrinkles, and neck bands.

It’s also popular to use it above the eyebrows to give patients a subtle “brow lift,” as well as above the upper lift to create what’s called a “lip flip.”

The neurotoxin can also create a more streamlined jawline. “A very popular area for Botox is in the masseter muscle, either to treat TMJ or for facial slimming, Treating this area has positive cosmetic results, and it helps patients who grind their teeth.

Botox is now even being used to treat acne.
