Picosecond (pico) laser tattoo removal is an advanced treatment that shatters tattoo ink into microscopic particles using ultra-short, trillionths-of-a-second energy pulses. It clears tattoos faster and with less discomfort than older lasers.
How Pico Technology Works
- Photomechanical Impact: Instead of primarily relying on heat to melt the ink, picosecond lasers generate rapid “pressure waves” that vibrate and shatter the pigment.
- Faster Clearance: The ink particles are shattered into much finer pieces than with traditional Q-Switch lasers, making them easier for your body’s immune system to naturally absorb and eliminate.
Key Advantages
- Fewer Sessions: Because of the efficiency of the wavelength targeting, patients often require fewer overall sessions.
- Less Damage to Surrounding Skin: Less heat translates to a significantly lower risk of thermal burns, scarring, or pigmentation changes in the surrounding skin.
- All Colors Treated: Pico laser uses a combination of wavelengths (like 755nm and 532nm) to clear stubborn and multi-colored inks.
What to Expect
- Number of Sessions: Total removal generally takes anywhere from 3 to 10 sessions, depending on the age, size, location, and color of the tattoo, as well as individual metabolism.
- Treatment Intervals: Sessions are typically spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart to allow your body sufficient time to metabolize and flush the broken-down ink.
- The Procedure: Before the session, a numbing cream or topical anesthetic is applied, though ice is also heavily utilized to help manage discomfort during the rapid pulsing.
- Recovery: Mild swelling and redness are normal immediately post-treatment, often referred to as “frosting”. Simple aftercare like applying a soothing ointment (such as Aquaphor) and protecting the area is standard practice.
